The International Peace Scholarship Fund, established in 1949, as stated earlier is a program that provides scholarships for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada. Members of P.E.O. believe that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding.

PEO International Peace Scholarships for Women Eligibility

An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.A student who is a non-citizen or non-permanent resident of the United States or Canada is not eligible.Scholarships are not given for research, internships, or practical training unless it is combined with coursework. Awards are not to be used to pay past debts.In order to qualify for her first scholarship, an applicant must have a full year of coursework remaining, be enrolled and in residence for the entire school year.Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working only on dissertations are not eligible as first-time applicants.international students attending county college are eligible to apply for a scholarship.

Information concerning the international peace Scholarship program is available from the P.E.O. Executive Office or from the website at peointernational.org.Eligibility must be established before application material is made available. PEO International Peace Scholarship Winners

PEO International Peace Scholarships have produced quite a handful of winners over time. The Scholarship Fellows have sought to pursue their careers in the fields of the university, scientific research, medicine, law, the performing arts, international economics, history, literature, government, and other demanding fields, and making lasting contributions to their corporate divisions. Let us meet some of them;

Shima Dowla

Shima Dowla has an M.D./Ph.D. in public health, University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine. She began her research while still in high school, studying neurotransmission in ADHD. Shima then acquired an A.B. Magna cum Laude from Dartmouth College with dual majors in neuroscience and Asia/Middle East studies. Her dissertation focused on the factors influencing healthcare decision-making among residents of a slum in Bangladesh. After completing her M.D. studies, Shima plans to practice as a pediatric endocrinologist and scientist to alleviate childhood obesity and chronic metabolic diseases in Germany and abroad.

Caitlin Doyle

She has a Ph.D. in English Literature and Creative Writing, University of Cincinnati. Caitlin Doyle’s love of poetry was inspired by her experience as a first-generation Irish American in songs, poetry, and stories from Ireland. Caitlin acquired a B.A. in English literature and creative writing with honors and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as Thomas Wolfe Scholar. She then completed an M.F.A. in creative writing at Boston University as a George Starbuck Fellow in Poetry. Her professional goals include publishing poetry collections, book reviews, and essays while teaching creative writing and literature at the university.

Mary Jane Drake

She has a D.V.M. in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. Mary Jane Drake graduated from the University of Richmond with a B.S. with summa cum laude and phi beta kappa. in biochemistry and molecular biology. Then she completed her doctorate. in microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently the first in her veterinary class at Penn where she focuses on livestock populations. Upon graduation, Mary Jane plans to continue to study animal production systems and practices for farmers to eventually draft a public policy on the management of infectious diseases in animal populations. The P.E.O. Sisterhood (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is a U.S.-based international women’s organization of about 230,000 members, with a primary focus on providing educational opportunities for female students worldwide. P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women CELEBRATE the advancement of women; EDUCATE women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship of Cottey College and MOTIVATE women to achieve their highest aspirations. The maximum amount awarded to a student is $12,500. Lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs. The scholarship is based upon demonstrated financial need; however, the award is not intended to cover all academic or personal expenses.
PEO Scholarships are meant for women who are citizens and permanent residents of the United States or Canada. The eligibility is restricted to these groups of persons.
