ABOUT SAMRO

The South African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) started in 1961 with the intent of protecting the intellectual property of musicians. They’re an independently registered not-for-profit company that represents over 12000 musicians in Southern Africa. They also manage the music education program and Corporate Social Investment (CSI) of the SAMRO Group. The SAMRO Foundation is involved in sponsorship and outreach programs within the Arts field. They offer some of the biggest bursary and scholarship awards for music students in the country, with over R1-million awarded to music students in bursaries within 2017. In the last 50 years, they have invested in excess of R100-million in the form of scholarships, bursaries, and commissions, so as to encourage the ethnic landscape, music heritage, and assorted industry enrichment projects of the nation.

Level/Field of Study:

Samro Bursaries are open to students currently studying towards a diploma or degree qualifications (from their second year of study ), majoring in Music.

Host Nationality:

This Scholarship will take place in SOUTH AFRICA.

Eligible Nationality:

The Samro Bursary is open to all South African students to study in any of the country’s universities.

Scholarship Benefits:

Bursaries will be awarded on the Value of R11 000 for each applicant, for the payment of tuition fees only.

 Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should meet the following minimum entrance standards before applying (please note that failure to meet each of the requirements will result in an application not being considered):

South African citizen/ Swaziland citizen/ Botswana citizen/ Lesotho citizenCompleted MatricRegistered and studying at a recognized South African UniversityStudying full time (in second/ third/ fourth year/honors/ masters degree) towards a Diploma or Degree majoring in music

Unfortunately, the following students are NOT eligible for the application of this bursary:

First-year University studentsDoctoral studentsBridging program/ Foundation program studentsThose studying at private tertiary institutes (Academy for Sound Engineering/ AFDA/ COPA/ City Varsity etc)Those specializing in the study of Music Therapy or Musical Theatre

ID document (certified copy of)Proof of University registration for 2022 (on tertiary letterhead)Most recent tertiary exam results/ academic record/ transcript (on tertiary letterhead)Two reference letters from your current university lecturers (please ensure that your references read the Reference Letter Guidelines)Masters students must add: synopsis of your thesis (max 5 to 8 pages) and a reference letter from your supervisor
